| In general, a Dog House with internal room dimensions of 3ft x 3ft x 3ft, is BIGGER then 75% of the Dog Houses built out there and will fit 70-80% of the entire population of dogs (in terms of Dog Sizes). When we talk internal room dimensions we are talking from wall to wall and from the floor to the top of the WALL (not the peak of the unit). These dimensions also don't account for the roof, the insulated floor and the 4 inches our units stand (off the ground) . As a guide: A unit with internal room dimensions of 3ft x 3ft x 3ft will stand nearly 6 ft high. A 4ftt x 4ft x 4ft unit will stand 7.5ft high and a 5ft x 5ft x 5ft unit will be nearly eight (this is an enormous unit and could actually double as a playhouse). In plain terms, our smaller units are bigger then most big dog houses sold. Many manufacturers choose to build smaller units for shipping reasons and extra costs associated with materials, not to mention that smaller units, are, by far, the quickest to put together. In this day and age a "better brand" of Dog House is on the market: When insulated, and climate controlled, Dog House Dimensions will not matter (as long as it is big enough for your pooch to get into). When properly insulated (with climate control) the question becomes: "How much space would I like to have my pooch romp around in?" People think that the heater(s), thermostats, and AC installation will add tons of costs, to their purchase. To the contrary, at Jimbo's you can spend roughly $65.00 and have it heated with a thermostat. For an additional $150, or so, dollars, you get an AC unit installed. Again, once these two items become part of your purchase package, Dog House size becomes a mute point. If, for some reason you are put in a position where you have to choose between heating OR cooling your Pet Shelter, we recommend you go with a smaller insulated unit and add the AC. Heat is a far worse health hazard to your pet then cold weather. However, if you are looking at a standard, non-insulated, dog house, dimensions become critically important. Especially in colder climates: Dogs rely upon their own body heat to keep the unit warm.. For the non-insulated house, Darker roofs bode well to help heat the dog house during daylight hours, and lighter color roofs are favored in the hotter weather. For cold weather, the smaller the unit, the better. If you desire to build your own Dog House, you might consider Bedding material made of Cedar or wood chips (obtainable at some feed mills), or shredded newspaper, are preferable to straw or blankets. Change bedding 1 to 2 weeks, and keep house interior clean.Or, you could construct a floor that is insulated. The net effect for both is better insulation. We also recommend that your house be elevated off the ground on bricks or cinder blocks, or built on 4x4 stilts (much like ours) to keep the floor dry, and it may then be necessary to provide a ramp or step so your dog can get over the raised door sill when entering. A low base platform is preferable, and allows the dog an area off the ground on which to lie when outside the house. If your dog is inclined to chew wood, it may be necessary to cover corners and entrance edges with metal, (dry walling corner strips) to prevent doghouse damage. Doghouse ConstructionMost Dog Houses can be simply made from readily available materials. As mentioned in other articles of ours most consist of a frame of 2"x2"s, with a 1/2" or 3/4" weatherproof plywood exterior. Some have an enterance and hallway which are separated from a sleeping area. Walls, floors, and ceiling of the sleeping area can be insulated which are covered on the inside with a paneling of 1/4" hardboard or similar material. Size of Sleeping Area Floor Space With each inch of your dog's height (measured from top of shoulder to ground) allow 36 square inches of floor space. For example, a dog 12 inches tall needs 432 square inches of floor space, or a floor area of 16" by 27" = 432 square inches. Height of Sleeping AreaAdd 1 or 2 inches to your dog's measurement when in a sitting position (from top of head to ground), in order to determine the ceiling height. For example, a dog 12 inches tall will have a sitting height of about 14 inches and the doghouse ceiling should be 15 or 16 inches high. Overall Doghouse Dimensions For example, a Dalmatian (20" tall, sitting height 23") doghouse should measure: sleeping area - 20"x36"; hall area - 12"x20"; ceiling height - 25"; doorways - 10" square; roof - 36"x72". Table 1 - BREED SHOULDER HEIGHTS Poodle, toy up to 10" Scottish Terrier 10" Poodle, miniature 10" to 14" Beagle under 13", up to 15" Shetland Sheepdog 13" to 16" Fox Terrier 15" to 16" American Cocker 15" to 16" Poodle, standard 15" to 16" Dalmatian 20" to 23" Boxer 22" to 24" Collie 22" to 24" Retrievers 22" to 25" German Shepherd 22" to 26" Old English Sheepdog 22" Airedale 23" Doberman 25" St. Bernard 25" to 28" Newfoundland 26" to 28" Great Dane 28" to 30" Russian Wolfhound 28" to 31" ORDERING A DOG HOUSE FROM JIMBO'S.
